Scams to Avoid in Paris
Two classic scams operating around Paris. The city is expensive enough as it is, without you having to part with your hard earned cash for no reason.
The Ring Trick
As you are walking around, enjoying the sights someone passes you and appears to pick up a gold ring off the floor. They ask if it is yours and say it must be your lucky day as they give you the ring. Only then do they ask you for money, their ‘family’ may also appear at this time to pressure you in to paying. The ‘gold’ ring is nothing more than a piece of brass or copper is totally worthless. You only realise this, of course, once you’ve handed over your cash.
The Bracelet Scam
A super friendly man approaches, offering you a small friendship bracelet in the name of peace and international friendship. Only once is it securely tied on your wrist are you then asked to pay for the item- which is little more than a piece of string (Some travellers reports begin charged up to €50). Should you refuse to pay you’ll typically find yourself surrounded by several members of the same group. While you might succeed in lowering the price it can be difficult to escape completely.
The best advice is just no never accept gifts from strangers.
